Eric is currently working on designs for Marinell, Glauce and Britomart, as the battle between Marinell and Britomart is next in line to be painted. Meanwhile, I made a short video about our project with some images that are not appearing in The Graphic Canon.

During our little hiatus between sections, I thought I’d share a portion of the construction of False Flora that I drew a while back. She’s a little more masculine than I’d like: I blame the shadow of the back edge of the jaw and the line of the neck for that. It’s graphite shavings rubbed into mat (matte?) board with a tissue or a stub, and then modified with extra pencil and a kneadable eraser.

I enjoy this method, but it’s not something I do often…perhaps we’ll see more later on in the project, but no promises. We’ve considered changing media between sections based on theme, with some options including pencil, ink (line or wash) and photography. No firm decisions have been made on if, when, or how yet.

Our Witch has a variety of little minions to do her bidding, and one not-so-little one: the Beast.

In the original text, the Beast was a big hyena. I’m not terribly fond of them visually, and would rather not spend a lot of time painting them, so for my own sake I pushed for a more wolf-like interpretation.

We toyed around with a few different versions: armor clad, mechanical, sculpted of earth and wood, and finally a spirit of soot and smoke. To express this, I’ve used wet-on-wet and wet-on-damp india ink for the wolf, and watercolor for the prosthetic limb, as shown in the test painting above. I was hoping to avoid incorporating india ink, despite loving the medium in isolation, but I couldn’t get the right textures with just watercolor.

One day last year I got an email from the editor of an anthology called The Graphic Canon. It’s a collection of classic literature adaptations put together by Seven Stories Press. At that time, we didn’t have much concrete, but the editor (Russ) gave us a deadline we could hit. Eric proceeded to chain himself to his painting station and crank out a preview sequence from early in our adaptation. I’ve included a few preview pages of what will be appearing the The Graphic Canon this summer. These pages are taken from a sequence in illustrating the Witch bargaining with the Devil (a.k.a Archimage) for False Flora’s (a.k.a False Florimell‘s) animating spirit.

I love painting deserts, for some reason. Maybe it’s the (apparent) simplicity, the feeling of expansiveness, or the desolation. Or maybe it’s just a passing fad. This particular one was originally going to be a rocky badlands setting, but I’m pretty happy with this incarnation.
